I use counseling, individual therapy, and trauma therapy...
The Akoben is the adinkra symbol for the war horn. The war horn is used as a call to action, a call to take up arms and prepare for battle. In Detroit and other predominantly Black cities everyday can feel like a battle. The Akoben represents the purest intentions of the work I do in counseling, fighting for the minds and spirit of our people. So many things in society are meant to indoctrinate you into believing that you are not enough, that you are flawed, or that you need to be better.
There is power in knowing yourself and defining yourself and individual therapy can help you feel more confident. There may be times when it seems like a battle; Akoben gives you tools to fight. You know what they say, "if you stay ready, you ain't gotta get ready."
I use counseling, individual therapy, and trauma therapy...
I am passionate about giving people the tools to free themselves. I am nurturing and supportive, people who work with me feel empowered to be unapologetic and to prioritize their peace. I love working with people of African descent in the diaspora who are intentional about their healing and connected to or reconnecting to our African roots. I specialize in trauma therapy for adult children of emotionally immature parents. My passion is working with people who are recovering from a difficult childhood, people whose family of origin couldn't handle the light they bring into the world, so they learned to dim or turn their light out completely.
When I read Post Trauma Slave Syndrome by Dr. Joy Degruy and The Isis Papers by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing I knew that I had to integrate their work into my work as a therapist. Both books talk about the experiences of people from African descent in a society that devalues us and actively works to dehumanizes us. I began to think about how healing could be possible in this society, when we are told to ignore all or part of ourselves. How can we heal in a society that is structured to disempower and ignore the pain/suffering of our people? We have to free ourselves and reclaim what we've lost. I understand the difficulties that we face when we make a decision to define our own worldview and embrace cultural and spiritual roots that empower us.
I am experienced in the healing of various forms of trauma, including childhood abuse/neglect, domestic violence, generational trauma, traumatic experiences/events, and racial trauma.
